The fashion industry’s biggest secret

12 February 2007 15 Comments

[ unlocked padlock image ]This week, I’m going to let you in on the fashion industry’s biggest secret. You won’t read this in a magazine or see it on FTV, ever, and it took me a few years to figure it out myself.

Knowing this secret will change the way you look at fashion, because it exposes a big disconnect between what the fashion’s industry’s impresarios say, and what they actually do.

Here’s the secret:

The fashion industry’s top tastemakers — the people so stylish they’re paid to show the rest of us how to dress — don’t follow fashion trends themselves.

How do I know this? I’ve looked at how they dress. From season to season and year to year, their own outfits barely change.

They might tell us to toss out last seasons’ skirts and buy some knickerbockers to wear to the office each day, but they’re still wearing the same style of pantsuit they’ve worn for a decade or more.

They know what suits them, and that’s what they wear — with only the slightest nod to the trends they’re paid to push. Ladylike one season, grunge the next? Sure, they’ll sell that to the masses… but no way would they do it themselves.

To prove my point, I’ve got a week of fashion icons and impresarios lined up, and I’ll show you that none of them follow fashion.

Stay tuned to see some big fashion industry names wearing the same looks they wore many seasons ago.

But don’t tell anyone, it’s a secret!

Oh, how right you are. But truly, that’s the difference between “fashion” and “style.” Fashion is blindly following what someone tells you you should wear vs. style, which is knowing what works for your body and your lifestyle and then adapting fashion trends to fit that style, i.e. colors, shapes, etc. (if they work for you). But style doesn’t move the merchandise, and so we’re told, twice a year, that this or that is what we should be wearing. Bravo for exposing the industry’s biggest secret!

I couldn’t agree more Anonymous! I love clothes, but I hate the way the stores only stock the latest trends. Some years, there will be literally nothing available that suits me; other years, there’s too much to choose from. The fashion industry would make a lot more money out of me if they just consistently stocked things that look great on me… I can wish I guess ;)

    Gala: Thank you so much!

That is too true, even I don’t follow all the trends that are “hot” this season because I like my personal style. x

Reminds me of a very stylish lady who used to work for the same department store’s buying office as I did. She had a beautiful navy Valentino suit with gold bow shaped buttons. Always stylish, and if I could wear gold, I would wear that suit today (some 12 years later) - timeless.

Helen, we have to meet one day soon, you sound so stylish!

Kathryn, your colleague sounds amazing. I love seeing women who know their style so well they can pull something that’s 10 years old out of their wardrobe and still look chic in it. So much more stylish than a new look every week.

So true! Such an astute observation… That’s part of fashion though isn’t it - knowing what suits you and keeping your own individual style no matter what the fashion trends are.

  • The Bargain Queen said:

Exactly! I couldn’t have said it better myself :)
