Cheap gift ideas: For pet lovers
As part of my strategy to focus on small gifts to make Christmas shopping easier and cheaper, I’m compiling the ultimate lists of gifts for under $20. I haven’t forgotten our four legged friends, though.
Chances are there are more than a few pet lovers on your gift list; about a third of U.S. citizens have pets, and nearly two thirds of Australians have a pet. Seeing how many of us pet lovers treat our pets as family, bringing a small gift for someone’s pet will no doubt make a great impression. And if you have a pet in your family, it may seem only natural to incorporate them into the gift-giving festivities.
Read on to find out which goodies are most likely to earn a wag of the tail.
Toys
Pet toys are an easy, cheap way to treat a pet. My husband and I have four spoiled cats with a large box of toys (not to mention quite a bit of cat furniture). While they each have their own favorite toy, their overall favorites are their Da Bird wand and attachments ($14.99 for a wand and 3 refill attachments) and their hologram laser pet toy (just $4.99!).
Of course dogs love to play, too, and many of the dog lovers I know recommend Kong fillable dog toys. The large one is $9.57, and the small one is $6.37. What do you fill them with? They can be filled with most kinds of treats, but a doggie favorite is the Kong Stuff’N Peanut Butter Paste. It’s also a favorite of dog lovers, too, since it comes in an easy to use bottle and is vitamin-enriched — plus it’s just $4.99.
Treats
For kitty treats, our finicky, snobby cat Sunshine highly recommends Feline Greenies ($9.31 for six 3-ounce packs). Normally demure at dinner time, I have to be careful that she doesn’t nip my fingers when I give her these treats. The other three cats love them, too (it’s about the only thing they can all agree on). And I love that their breath smells so much nicer after eating them!
Greenies also makes dog treats in many different sizes, from “teenie” treats ($7.94 for a 15-ounce bag) to jumbo toothbrush-shaped treats ($19.84 for 10).
Safety & Health
Taking the dog for a walk can be a fun way to spend time with your pal, but it can also be dangerous. If you walk in the evening or early morning, make sure that your pal can be seen. For just $2.90, these collar blinkers will do the trick.
Pets need plenty of fluids, too. Whether walking around the neighborhood or traveling across the country, make sure your pet has access to water using this Gulpy pet water dispenser ($7.22).
For the pet lovers themselves
Of course, not all pet gifts are for the pets. If a cat lover on your list has a doormat that has seen better days, they would no doubt appreciate this doormat featuring adorable, mischievous kitties.
Foxy fashions
Since we are the “Fashion and Beauty Bargain Queens”, it wouldn’t be right to ignore all those wonderful pet fashion. This extra small, pink fashion sweater is absolutely stunning for just $5.99. For larger dogs, this green, argyle sweater ($14.82) is a fabulous unisex choice.
Don’t think that pet fashions are just for the dogs! This pink kitty sweater ($9.99) is specially designed for the fashionable cat.
If the pets on your list aren’t exactly into pet clothes, they can still be fashion forward. Sara recently found these fabulous rhinestone collars for just $4.49!
Semi-homemade ideas
I recently wrote about homemade gift ideas for humans, but pets love homemade goodies, too! For starters, check out these recipes for pet treats over at Pastrywiz.com!
While catnip and wheat grass can be bought at just about any pet store, they’re easy to grow at home. Even if you do grab some at the pet store, repot it in something nice like this blue ceramic pot. While it’s just $9.95, it will do wonders for the presentation.
Finally, don’t underestimate the value of a particularly adorable photo. Sneak some photos of someone’s pets and you can personalize anything that has a spot for a photo. Whether it’s a photo bookmark ($3.49) for a book lover or a nice storage box ($17.99).
